Course Overview
This course offers a rigorous and integrative introduction to the intersection of archetypal astrology, depth psychology, and non-ordinary states of consciousness through the archetypal cosmological perspective developed by Richard Tarnas and Stanislav Grof.
Taught by Chad Harris, with special guest participation from Richard Tarnas, this 9-class course is designed to lay a strong foundation for ongoing study and practice within the archetypal astrological tradition. The course places particular emphasis on the relationship between archetypal complexes and non-ordinary states of consciousness—including psychedelic, holotropic, and spontaneous experiences—as well as the role of personal transits in clarifying periods of heightened psychological and spiritual transformation.
As the healing potentials of psychedelic medicines are increasingly explored, the question of how to engage these powerful modalities with depth, discernment, and care becomes ever more important. This course approaches that question through a symbolic and cosmological framework, emphasizing alignment with archetypal processes rather than control of outcomes.
This course offers a path to deeper attunement with the living intelligence of the cosmos.

About the Instructor
Chad Harris is an archetypal astrologer, teacher, and practitioner in the lineage of Richard Tarnas and Stanislav Grof. He has been offering professional astrological consultations since 2008, guiding clients through the depth psychological and spiritual dimensions of their lives with clarity, insight, and care.
Chad’s work is rooted in the archetypal cosmological perspective developed at the Esalen Institute and later at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where he assisted in course instruction from 2003 to 2022. His approach integrates natal chart and transit analysis with an understanding of non-ordinary states of consciousness, including psychedelic integration and Holotropic Breathwork.
He has presented at major conferences including the United Astrology Conference, the International Transpersonal Conference, and the Science of Consciousness Conference, and is a contributing author to Archai.
Chad’s work is animated by a lifelong devotion to the evolution of consciousness and the cultivation of what James Hillman called the “archetypal eye”—the deeper patterns and intelligences shaping human experience—and our capacity to consciously participate in them.
